The International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms conducted a study of lion’s mane mushrooms to determine their impact on promoting the growth of neurons in the brain. These results concluded that lion’s mane mushrooms contained neuroactive compounds that induced nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and promoted growth in the cells studied.

There is also some research that suggests consuming mushrooms on a regular basis can reduce the risk of cognitive decline due to the high concentration of antioxidants and other nutrients. In an examination survey conducted by the British Journal of Nutrition, mushroom intake was found to have a positive correlation to cognitive function. It is believed this benefit is due to the antioxidants ergothioneine and glutathione, as well as vitamin D, which are present in mushrooms. The study included 2,840 participants and concluded that greater mushroom consumption may reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
